Best spots for Winter Boating

Heading into Winter, many people may think that the boating season is over. However, Winter boating is arguably some of the best boating here in New Zealand with stunning clear days and less people on the water.

Our team have put together some of their favourite locations for Winter boating in New Zealand.

1)    Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough Sounds
Whether you are a Marlborough local, or looking for a destination to visit, it is hard to pass by the Queen Charlotte Sound. With stunning views and endless locations to visit you will be blown away by the quiet tranquillity, especially during the colder months.

If you are looking for an easy-going tour that allows you to simply take in the sites, we suggest heading on the Mail Run. Otherwise, if you’re on your own boat, enjoy the endless possibilities of spots to explore and find.

2)    Ruby Island, Lake Wanaka
Although you will need to plan your trip for a good weather day, there is nothing more stunning than touring the lake with the incredible backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Tiki Tour your way around with a thermos of hot drinks (mulled wine for those not driving!) before parking up at Ruby Island. Stroll around the gorgeous Island, take in all of the serenity and native bush and snap a few shots for the photo book.

3)    Smoke House Bay, Great Barrier Island
Only accessible by boat, Smoke House Bay is a boaties treasure. With baths, a smokehouse and BBQ seating/pit, you will be spoiled for choice on activities to do during winter. Have a relaxing bath while your friends and family stoke the fire ready for the day’s catch to be cooked for dinner.

4)    Hen and Chicken Islands, Northland
We know this is technically multiple spots, but why only check out one when you could see many close by? With each island offering something slightly different, you could make an entire day of touring the rugged locations. Only a 1-hour boat ride from Tutukaka (at 20 knots), this location is a great option for a day’s adventuring during Winter.
If you are an avid diver and don’t mind the cold, the Hen and Chicks provide some of the best diving and free diving in the area, with waters often crystal clear. You will be amazed by the incredible underwater rock formations and shear drops.

5)    Tiritiri Matangi, Hauraki Gulf
A short ride from Gulf Harbour Marina and the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, Tiritiri Matangi is a stunning island with lots of different bays to tuck up into depending on the wind direction. A wildlife sanctuary, the Island is known for its stunning native flora and fauna and provides excellent walking tracks to spend the day appreciating its natural wonders. Pack a lunch and make a day of exploring the island and relaxing in its stunning bays.

6)    Kawau Island, Hauraki Gulf
With lots of different stunning bays around the entire island, you’re spoilt for choice and always likely to find a sheltered spot. Bon Accord harbour is consistently a favourite with the Kawau Boating Club offering up fantastic food and a great atmosphere.
Many boaties visit Mansion House to enjoy the heritage listed building and stunning surrounds. Beehive Island is a popular choice to spend an afternoon, white sand and crystal-clear water will make you believe you are in a tropical island. Our favourite location is Vivian Bay, with a picturesque outlook and beautiful scenery on the ride over.
